A look back at the best albums of 2012

Making a list of my favorite albums of a year is fairly simple: I think of which discs I spun most often in my Jeep in 2012, then subtract the ones that weren't released in 2012 (even though I may have discovered them during that calendar year). For me, three albums got the most airtime in my vehicle last year. They are:

My top 10 movies of 2012

Here are my picks for the top 10 movies of 2012:

1. "This Is 40" -- Writer-director Judd Apatow's first great film in five years, rather than being one long joke about getting older, instead chronicles a point in life that many people can relate to, as Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) deal with a bad economy even as they raise kids. I recently re-watched my No. 1 movie of 2007, "Knocked Up," which introduced these characters, and "This Is 40" is better, with well-developed new characters and a few familiar faces.

My top 10 TV shows of 2012

Here are my top 10 TV shows of 2012:

1. "Parenthood" (Season 3-4, NBC) -- I hate to have the same No. 1 two years in a row, but "Parenthood" -- the only current series where having a Kleenex box nearby is a must -- gave me no choice. During the run of "Friday Night Lights," "Parenthood" was "Jason Katims' other show." Now it is filling "FNL's" niche as the major-network show that best captures the universal human experience even though parenthood, like football, isn't universal. This fall has been dominated by Kristina's cancer arc, but it's the non-awards-baiting moments such as Max winning the student presidency or Julia finally connecting with Victor that really stand out.
